Today the world's electricity generation and distribution systems are passing through a period of rapid fundamental change, driven by worldwide concerns about climate change and dramatic growth in electricity demand. Electricity demand is also becoming 'peakier' as a result of customers increasingly rapid uptake of electric appliances such as air conditioners. This is being offset by a welcome and growing use of renewable generation sources such as Solar PV, however these are intermittent sources of energy that are not available all the time.

A key part of the solution to these expensive issues lies in the cost effective storage of electrical energy - that means batteries that have the capacity to store tens to hundreds of kilowatt-hours of power (enough to run a household or small community for several hours).

 Ergon Energy, the major regional electricity distribution utility in Queensland, is currently deploying thirty of our "plug and play" energy storage systems to reduce peak demand on stressed assets in their SWER and rural electricity networks. These systems include fully integrated remote monitoring and control to maximise their value to the utility.

Our zinc bromine battery, with the benefit of larger scale manufacturing:

• performs better, is lighter and lasts longer; and
• will be lower cost than conventional battery alternatives.

As electricity utilities and consumers increasingly switch to the "smart grid" in coming years, we see zinc bromine batteries as an integral part of this large growth market.
