Zinc Bromine vs Lead Acid
It is useful to compare the zinc bromine battery with its lead acid counterpart. Lead acid (LA) batteries are readily available and are well known to most people.
The two most common types of LA batteries are car batteries (designed for short bursts of high current when starting the engine) and deep cycle batteries (for larger scale energy storage where the battery is regularly discharged). The ZB battery competes with the deep cycle LA battery. Deep cycle LA batteries are already used in applications in the utility and solar PV markets which RedFlow is targeting with its ZB batteries.
When compared with deep cycle LA batteries, the RedFlow ZB battery has the following advantages:
- Lower initial manufacturing costs (for ZB batteries manufactured at large scale);
- One-sixth of the weight, and one-third of the volume, making ZB batteries much easier and cheaper to transport and install;
- Longer life in heavy duty daily cycling applications;
- One-fifth of the overall cost during the battery's lifetime;
- 100% discharge capability; and
- More environmentally friendly with no lead or heavy metals used, and fully recyclable components.
ZB batteries made by RedFlow are undergoing continual improvement, offering future step-changes in performance as development continues. In contrast, LA batteries are a mature and fully developed technology, with only incremental improvements now likely.
