Grid support & peak load management
RedFlow’s zinc-bromine Power+BOS® energy storage systems are already at work, managing peak demand in rural electricity networks. For example, a cluster of Power+BOS® systems installed in 2009 into a SWER network in south-east Queensland is greatly enhancing power quality for customers at evening peak times, while allowing deferral of significant capital upgrades in poles, wires and transformers.
These systems are scheduled to feed back 240 V AC back into the grid at evening peak times. They are recharged overnight when electricity demand is lowest.
Growth in daily peak demand caused by increasing customer use of electric appliances is a significant cost issue for distribution utilities world-wide.
Electricity usage of a household or business changes throughout the day. Households normally have a large peak in electricity usage in the evening when families return from work or school, prepare meals and watch TV. Combine that with extra electricity used for air-conditioning or heating (especially in unusual weather conditions), and the peak electricity demand can be several times the average demand.
For a utility, this high peak electricity demand normally means that the distribution networks (poles, wires, substations and transformers) have to be constantly upgraded as consumers install more and more devices which increase this peak load.
